Happy or Sad, Emotions Persisted Beyond Remembering an Event

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Happy or Sad? How long does a sad movie leave you feeling blue? Remembering something sad can trigger emotions that persist long after the event itself has passed. But people with impaired memories seem to retain the emotion long after they have forgotten the emotionally charged event itself—longer, in fact, than people who can recall the incident well—according to a new study.

The findings, published online April 12 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, are some of the first to investigate the persistence of emotion after memory of the triggering incident has faded and reveal a need for more research about how people with faulty memories, such as the growing number of people with Alzheimer’s disease, process and conserve emotions.

How To Conserve Brain Power

Monday, June 21st, 2010

We can all agree on that the ability to prioritize is good to master. Many even think that it’s easy to do. But David Rock, the author of the book “Your Brain at Work”, does not agree. He says that it’s one of the most energy-consuming activity the brain can perform, and if not managed properly the brain’s energy pool will drains quickly.

Does Heading the Ball Cause Brain Damage?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

positions and soccer heading 21136840 208x300Football is the greatest game in the world. It is also a fun way to get fit and to stay healthy.

- Benni McCarthy

Question is whether heading a football is harmful for the brain.

It is World Cup in South Africa now and FIFA’s Medical Assessment and Research Centre (F-MARC), in collaboration with Grassroot Soccer, has developed ‘The 11 for Health’ programme. This programme improves children’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards diseases through football. This made us curious on what kind of effects it may cause the brain.

Footballs kicked by highly skilled players can travel over 100 km/hour. Heading the ball may have caused the neurological problems reported in soccer players. However, it is possible that other types of head injury were responsible for these injuries. For example, many professional soccer players suffer head injuries when they collide with other players or hit the ground. Therefore, soccer-related brain injury may not necessarily be due to heading the ball. On the other hand, it is unknown if repeated low intensity impacts, like those that occur when the ball is headed, make players more susceptible to later impacts.

Magnesium is Good for the Brain

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Magnesium is a substance that we need in small amounts in particular for the nerve cells to function better. A group of Chinese researchers found that an injection of magnesium makes rats become better at learning new things and get improved memory.
Apart from the addition of magnesium, the rats had an ordinary diet, which means they did not suffer any shortage of magnesium, prior to injection.

Pretty Women Distract Men

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

prettywomanScientists have confirmed that being in the presence of a beautiful woman really does mess up the male brain. A study has revealed that men who spend just a few minutes in the company of gorgeous female perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function.

Psychologist Dr George Fieldman said men are programmed to think about passing on their genes. He said: ‘When a man meets a pretty woman, he is what we call “reproductively focused”.

But a woman also looks for signs of other attributes such as wealth, youth and kindness. Just the look of the man would be unlikely to have the same effect. Researchers suggest that men use up so much of their brain function – or ‘ cognitive resources’ – trying to impress beautiful women, they have little left for other tasks.
